High School Football Player's Death Highlights Importance of Heat Stroke Awareness

Before even setting foot in his first high school class, a 14-year-old incoming freshman at Greensboro's Walter Hines Page Senior High School died of severe heat stroke after the first optional workout of the season for the school’s football program.

The tragedy brought to lite an issue that emerges around this time every year as athletes head out to workouts and practices in the midst of the summer heat: the need for awareness of conditions such as heat stroke.

Recognizing Heat Stroke Conditions

The conditions during the workout were not extreme in nature: roughly the mid-80’s in temperature with approximately 25% humidity. However, even conditions such as these could lead to overheating, particularly in instances of hard work or intense exercise. Football usually adds a heavier degree of difficulty because players wear heavily-padded helmets that can trap heat inside, particularly dark-colored ones.

Whenever out in the heat, whether you’re playing football, or doing any other activity, it is important to make sure to stay hydrated. A constant flow of cool water can not only help keep body temperatures down, but keep the body sweating normally, which keeps heat flowing away from the skin. The school’s athletic staff noted that the coaches encouraged frequent water breaks during these workouts, and that all athletes were required to undergo a physical examination prior to participation.

This accident also came just days after the coaching staff of the school’s football program took a training course called “Heads Up,” which highlighted the importance of identifying and responding to conditions including concussions, cardiac arrest and other emergencies in addition to heat illness.
