The
firm, now known as Twiggs, Beskind, Strickland and Rabenau, P.A. has
a 50 year history. TAST was born of two firms, one was founded
by Charles Blanchard, a Duke graduate in 1950 and another founded by
Howard Twiggs, a Wake Forest graduate in 1960. When he started his
firm in 1950, Charles Blanchard was one of the first lawyers in
North Carolina to specialize in representing injured persons. A few
years later, Howard Twiggs began the practice of law in Raleigh and
in 1960, he established his own firm. Since then, he, too, has
represented injured people in personal injury litigation.
In
February, 1975, the law firms started by Charles Blanchard, then
known as Blanchard, Tucker, Denson & Cline and the firm started
by Howard Twiggs, called Twiggs and Hassell merged to form
Blanchard, Tucker, Twiggs & Denson. Their offices were located
on the fourth floor of the BB&T Building on Fayetteville Street
Mall. In addition, to representing plaintiffs in personal injury
cases, the firm handled other matters as well.
In
1978, the law firm of Corvette and Earls joined, and the firm name
became Blanchard, Tucker, Twiggs, Denson & Earls. At that time,
the firm also had an office in Cary run by Tom Earls. In 1979,
Douglas recently graduated from Wake Forest, joined the firm.
In
the summer of 1980, the firm moved into a building that they had
renovated located on the Fayetteville Street within a block of the
Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. In 1982, Peggy a Wake Forest
graduate and former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Willis Whichard
joined the firm. In 1983, Alex Denson left the firm to become a
federal judge and the firm's name became Blanchard, Tucker, Twiggs,
Earls & Abrams.
In
1984, Don Strickland, a Duke graduate, joined the firm and Tom Earls
and the Cary office became a separate firm. Our firm name became
Blanchard, Tucker, Twiggs & Abrams. Since then, everyone in the
firm has limited their practice to representation of plaintiffs
exclusively in complex personal injury, medical malpractice,
products liability, commercial torts, aviation and insurance fraud
and bad faith actions.
Jay
Trehy, a UNC graduate joined in 1988, Irvin Tucker became "of
counsel" and the firm name became Blanchard, Twiggs, Abrams
& Strickland.
The
firm sold its small office building in 1987 so that a new building,
what is now called the First Union Capitol Center, could be built on
its site. During construction, the firm moved to the corner of
Morgan and McDowell Streets. In 1992, Karen Rabenau, a UNC graduate,
joined the firm.
The
firm moved into the First Union Capitol Center in 1993 and has been
on the 11th floor since that time. Also in 1993, Irvin Tucker
retired and Don Beskind, who also is on the faculty at Duke Law
School, joined the firm as counsel. In 1995, one of our founding
partners, Charles Blanchard retired from the firm, and the firm
became Twiggs, Abrams, Strickland & Trehy, P.A. In
2001, Jay Trehy elected to become "of counsel" with the
firm and Doug Abrams departed. Recognizing those changes, the
firm name became Twiggs, Beskind, Strickland & Rabenau, P.A.
